Ever look at your worn out, cracked, stained concrete and wonder...what’s the best way to make this look fabulous? It’s time to give that drab grey slab a make over! It’s time to resurface your concrete!

When you decide to resurface your concrete, you are opening yourself up to a plethora of design options. From stamping and staining to mimicking the look and feel of natural stone, brick or wood, there are so many amazing designs to choose from to give your concrete a high-end look at the fraction of the cost of natural wood, stone or brick.

What is concrete resurfacing in Los Angeles?

Most people think that any damaged concrete must be pulled out and completely repoured. Not true!

When you resurface your concrete, you are basically adding a fresh new layer on top of your original concrete to give it a new look.  A new concrete coating is applied over the old surface, offering a variety of color, texture and pattern options.

You can do this on your driveway, walkway, patio, pool decks, even indoor floors. Basically, anywhere in your home where you have concrete can be resurfaced.

Resurfacing old concrete is perfect for:

  • Covering old, worn out, unsightly concrete

  • Fixing  smaller cracks

  • Hiding surface imperfections

  • Updating outdated finishes

  • Addressing discoloration

How do I know if I can resurface or I need to replace my concrete in Los Angeles?

If you have a concrete surface, you already how durable and easy to maintain it can be. It can last for decades and need only minimal upkeep with regular washing and resealing. But let’s say your concrete has been looking a little worn and drab. A new surface can spruce up its look.

When you decide to resurface your concrete, consult first with a contractor who can take a look at the state of your current concrete. As long as the cracks are only ¼ inch wide, you should be able to resurface your concrete. If your current concrete is structurally sound, you can pour a fresh layer of concrete to hide any imperfections that have sprung up over the years.

What happens when a new surface is applied to my concrete?

If your concrete is good structural shape, you contractor will work to prepare the concrete to be resurfaced.

Some of the basic steps include:

  • Small cracks will be covered by a prime coat and then the base coat of the resurfacing materials.

  • Larger cracks will be repaired.

  • The concrete will be cleaned, stripping awy dirt, oil, grease as well as any coatings, sealers, or paints.

  • The concrete surface will be roughened up to that the new concrete overlay will have an appropriate surface to grab onto.

After those have been repaired you can choose an overlay to be applied. An overlay is where you can upgrade to a nice style that can reflect your love of your home. Overlays can be stamped, stained, stenciled or engraved to add color or simulate the look of brick, stone, tile or slate.

What are some of my design options?

With concrete, there are a myriad of design options, most of which use staining and stamping textures into the concrete. Work with your conctractor to create a unique, one-of-a-kind design.

  • Staining: This is when a special stain coloring is added to the concrete. Stains can be added to give your concrete the look of natural stone, brick or wood. Or, you can stain your concrete any way you want. You can stain concrete inside or outside your home.

  • Stamping: Stamping is what it sounds like -- a specialized stamp is used to create a new design in the concrete. Stamped concrete can mimic the look of brick, natural stone, or even wood.

How much will a resurfaced concrete cost in Los Angeles?

As with any home improvement project, the cost depends on the amount of detail you are putting into the project. A basic design requires much less in terms of materials and labor, so will cost less. However, more intricate designs require more intensive labor and materials and therefore will cost more.

  • Plain design: A plain, grey design with straight lines will likely run about $3 to $6 per square foot.

  • Simple design: A more simple design that uses just one color and one decorative stamp will probably cost about $6 to $10 per square foot.

  • Custom design: Looking for something more elaborate? A custom design using two or three colors with a contrasting border will end up costing about $10 to $15 per square foot.

  • Elaborate design: Ready for the ultimate in eye-catching, high-end results? When you choose a more elaborate design with hand-applied coloring, borders and sawcut designs you will end up with amazing results. This will run $15 or more per quare foot.
