Can Concrete Flooring Work in Your Home?

I know what you’re thinking, concrete flooring in a home? What craziness is that? It does sounds crazy but it honestly works and many prefer it in their homes due to all the benefits it offers and even better, has many designs, patterns and colors that you can have the look you vibe best with. Once you see it, you’ll understand why people fall head over heels in love with it. To help you understand why you might prefer a concrete floor and what it can do for you home, I’ve complied my most commonly asked questions and interesting facts about this unique flooring.

What is it?

Concrete it just what it sounds like – concrete used as your flooring, instead of being covered up by carpet, wood or tiles. You can use the existing concrete in your home, or pour fresh concrete.

Is it Weird?

Not at all! With a myriad of color and style options available, you can customize your concrete flooring in a way not possible with traditional floor coverings to make it reflect your style and personality.

How Much Will it Cost?

The cost of a concrete floor really depends on which style, color and finishing options you choose. The mid-range starts at $7 per square foot, while more elaborate styles can cost up to $30 per square foot.

Why Would I Want it?

Why not? Not only is it easier to maintain than traditional flooring options, but it’s also more durable and will last for decades looking like the day it was poured, if installed and maintained correctly.

Here are some other frequently asked questions:

  • Does it look like a driveway or parking lot? Only if you want it too. Concrete can be covered with a finishing that will allow it to take the pattern, color or design of your choice. So unless you like that driveway look, you can have the style you want.
  • Won’t the floors be cold and easily damp? You know that cool feeling on your feet when you go to the bathroom on a chilly morning or first step into your kitchen? That’s how cool the concrete will be. Most floorings (besides carpet) get cool at some point or another; concrete is no different.
  • How easy is it to slip? Well, have you ever slipped on a wood floor or tile? Like other flooring, concrete can be slippery when wet or wearing socks. Applying sealer can help, but also keep the floor dry and don’t use wax -- a big NO NO! Concrete floors are no slippery than others. You can also add rugs to areas that are more prone to getting wet to reduce an accident.
  • How Durable are the Floors?  Extremely durable thanks to the materials used in concrete. And as long as it is properly installed, sealed and maintained, it will be scratch and stain resistant for years, even decades!
  • Do I have to do maintained it? Do you have to clean any of your other floors? Yes. Do wood floors need fixed? Yes. It’s quite simple. All floors need maintenance during their lifetime, even carpets! Basic maintenance is best to keep your floors looking great year after year. And if you’ve never done work on any of your floors, think of this as a PSA that you need to take a good look at them. The nice thing about concrete floors, though, is that it takes far less work to keep them looking spectacular than other, more traditional, flooring options.
  • Is this a good floor for pets?  It floors me, pun intended, that so many ask this. If you have a pet then you know the shedding struggle. I have 3 cats, two that shed so much.  Concrete flooring makes cleaning up so much easier. Rather than it getting deep into the carpet, it stays on top and can be vacuumed or swept away in a snap. And as a bonus, it keeps pet dander at bay so all of us who love our fur babies, but suffer from allergies, can rejoice!
  • Can I DIY?  No. It may be tempting and you may even find videos online, but for best results and to keep your home safe, this needs left to the professionals. The chemicals and mixes involved can be harmful and it needs to be properly installed to prevent damage to the home.
  • What area can I add concrete too? Great question! Really anywhere in the home you wish. Thanks to concrete being durable it is waterproof with proper seals so you don’t have to worry if you wish to add it to the bathroom, kitchen or laundry room. And if it gets wet it can be wiped right up.
  • Can I pour it over my existing floors? This depends on what type of flooring you already have and if it can be properly prepped and secured to fit over the old flooring. It’s best to consult with a professional to determine if this is possible in your home or if you will have to remove the old flooring to add the concrete.
  • How much would this cost me? Like with any home remodeling project costs come from a variety of factors. Size, style, color all will determine final costs. Also if old flooring needs to be removed first, you could see some demo costs. Call us to get an estimate and talk options.  In the long run though it will save you so much as maintaining concrete is easy and does not need replaced as often as other flooring materials.
